International solidarity with earthquake victims in Italy
We thank you for the solidarity received from various countries and organizations, which we are passing on to our Unione Inquilini comrades in the affected areas.
The earthquake that shook central Italy on 24/08/16 was devastating, with more than 250 dead, hundreds injured and many villages destroyed.
There are ongoing relief efforts to help people who remain trapped and to accommodate survivors.
The reconstruction process should immediately be set into motion, in a participatory manner, to prevent evictions and speculation due to neoliberalist reconstruction policies from being added to the disaster.
Unfortunately, this is a scenario that we have often seen in Italy and around the world. The most recent case is that of the evictions of people living on the island of Muisne, planned after Ecuador’s earthquake in April.
This issue will therefore be a central theme of the People’s Social Forum Resistance Habitat III and a strong argument to further promote global and local mobilization and solidarity.
Because solidarity is the key to rebuilding the cities and villages of Italy and of the world!
