Fambai zvakanaka, Odindo, go well!

The IAI stand in solidarity with the Odindo Opiata's comrades, colleagues, friends and family, our comrade and friend, a consistent activist, fighting for the dignity and rights of the marginalised and the voiceless of Kenya’s urban areas.

The International Alliance of Inhabitants is saddened to learn of the passing of our comrade and friend, Odindo Opiata. From his student days through his exile and imprisonment to the foundation of Hakijamii, he was a consistent activist, fighting for the dignity and rights of the marginalised and the voiceless of Kenya’s urban areas. His efforts contributed to his country’s liberation from internal tyranny, building the new Kenya that is now a beacon to those of us in the rest of Africa who continue to face oppression at the hands of local comprador elites whose neo-liberal policies and authoritarianism keep our people poor, insecure and marginalised.

He will be missed but his life’s work infuses the continuing struggle for a truly democratic Kenya and will live on as an example for ourselves and for coming generations. From South Africa to Tunisia, from Senegal to Somalia, all progressive activists should acknowledge the role of Odindo Opiata in promoting the vision of another possible Africa where all our peoples live in freedom and with dignity.

We, the global community of the IAI, stand in solidarity with his comrades, colleagues, friends and family.

Fambai zvakanaka, Odindo, go well!

A Facebook memorial page has been set up to send condolences and pay tribute to Opiata here
