California, Prayer Walk for Homes and Healing

CHAM is organizing a Prayer Walk for Homes and Healing to take place at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, October 6. The walk will begin at St. James Park near the corner of First and St. John Street, and will proceed through the neighborhood where we will pass by and pray before several vacant and/or foreclosed homes.

Throughout October and November, CHAM, an USACAI member, is planning a series of prayer walks, vigils, and teach-ins. In faith we openly call on Almighty God to get involved in our people's increasingly desperate battle to survive. Over 43,500 homes will have been foreclosed in San Jose alone from 2008-2012.

As we speak, the Federal Housing Finance Agency is attempting to sell 250,000 empty foreclosed homes to corporate speculators instead of using them to house the homeless and care for the poor. As Time Magazine reported on August 1, banks in many parts of the country are now evicting residents and then DEMOLISHING their houses to reduce the “oversupply of homes on the market.”

A system that bulldozes homes while it cannot even house its people cries out to be altered or abolished. It is time to emulate Occupy Wall Street and take back our government from banks and corporations. It is time to reestablish government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Homes should be used to shelter families from the cold, not as Mortgage Security Bonds to buy and sell on Wall Street for private profit.

We will call on God to move our government to stop the evictions of people from their homes, and fill the vacant buildings with families in need.

Stop evictions!

Housing is for people, not corporations!

Knock, and the door shall be opened to you!
