USF debates funding options for urban land and housing in Latin america and the Caribbean

On 4th September, representatives from Mexico, Argentina, Peru and Brazil met at the Urban Social Forum in Naples to discuss how to promote alternative urban land and housing policies for the region and how to strengthen advocacy efforts and encourage governments to adopt better means of funding low-income housing development.

The first steps in this direction should involve assessing the current status of each country, evaluating current policies and successful grassroots experiences. In addition, we need to share, discuss and disseminate experience in the field; draw up a basic regional proposal; and hold a workshop on the subject in the first half of 2013. Those present agreed that for this initiative to succeed, it must meet two basic conditions: first, it must be genuinely based on grassroots experience, and, second, it must be inclusive, involving all relevant networks and movements in the region.
