CALL: FIRST FORUM FOR MEDITERANEAN INHABITANTS TOWARDS CREATION OF A MEDITERRANEAN NETWORK OF INHABITANTS

APPEL: PREMIER FORUM DES HABITANTS DE LA MEDITERRANEE VERS LA CREATION DU RESEAU MEDITERRANEEN DES HABITANTS

We would like to welcome you all to Marseille, France,  from 21 to 23 June 2019!

We are the more than 500 million people that inhabit the 22 countries bordering our sea, the Mediterranean. In this communal area that we share, we could create a good atmosphere of living together in peace; we could move around freely, respecting the environment and the human rights of all people.

If it weren’t for the neoliberal and speculative policies that provoke neo-colonial wars and migration. The coastlines have been devoured; towns are collapsing; the inhabitants are impoverished, being evicted and pushed towards the margins of society. These policies fuel the wars between the poor, gender discrimination, fundamentalism and racism, even on an institutional level, raising walls that lead to thousands of deaths in the sea, violations of international laws on human rights ratified by the countries.

Enough! We, the inhabitants of the Mediterranean, say that enough is enough. The political decision makers are deforming and devouring our towns, our villages, our rural areas, our lives!

However, alternative solutions exist – grounded in the resistance of inhabitants through the work of the social movements on the two shores of the Mediterranean, the Social Forum, meetings and international exchanges.

In November 2018, the deadly collapses on rue d'Aubagne, Marseille, brought together thousands of people wanting to reclaim justice and the right to the city. At the same time, in Marrakesh, social organisations from several bordering countries proposed the creation of the Mediterranean Network of Inhabitants.

The exchanges and meetings held that month reconciled and reinforced these dynamic moves. In Marseille, the collectives, associations and social organisations united to rally round the Manifesto for a lively people’s Marseille. The International Alliance of Inhabitants developed the network’s proposal to collect and promote the exchange of experiences, the sharing of strategies and solidarity on a Mediterranean level.

We are therefore calling everyone to the first Forum for Mediterranean Inhabitants in Marseille on 20, 21, 22 and 23 June 2019, and to the General assembly for a lively, people’s Marseille from 22 to 23 June, where the focus will be on the right to the city – solidary, multi-ethnic and multicultural.

In workshops, meetings, cultural activities, we, the people from Marseille and international networks, can demonstrate to the decision makers that the deaf local ears and the closed international meetings are far from the minds of the inhabitants collectives that are fighting every day to see improvements in their lives.

We will discuss the right to housing, the right to water and a healthy environment, to health, to public services, to participatory local governance, to the free movement of people, and to gender equality.

This step will be marked by a surprise demonstration.

So, everyone please come to Marseille, France, to the  Forum for Mediterranean Inhabitants. This is our common space for solidarity for the future!

P.S. No, don’t be mistaken: the Forum for Mediterranean Inhabitants is alternative to and precedes the Meeting of the Two Shores, meeting of 5 + 5 states, organized organised by France to relaunch the Union for the Mediterranean... For that, citizens will be chosen and shortlisted..
