Bandung, Indonesia, 5th Urban Social Forum: December 16, 2017

The 5th Urban Social Forum will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2017 in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia and is a public, democratic, and inclusive space for the discussion and formulation of alternative and progressive ideas for our cities. The event invites civil society organizations, social leaders, community members, students and academics from all over Indonesia and beyond to gather and exchange experiences, build knowledge, and network with other leaders and organizations.

Courageous resistance to forced eviction for New Yogyakarta International Airport

On the morning of 27th November 400 officials – police, army and representatives of Indonesia’s state-owned airport developer PT Angkasa Pura I – arrived to survey land for New Yogyakarta International Airport (NYIA) in the Temon District in the Kulonprogo Regency, on the south coast of central Java. An attempted land grab for the airport, and the courageous resistance of residents resisting forced eviction is documented in a video by Jogja Darurat Agraria . In the space of just two days bulldozers have wreaked devastation reminiscent of a powerful earthquake that struck the island of Java in 2006. Parts of some houses have been destroyed and trees and plants uprooted leaving bare earth.

Most of the residents are from the Dalit community.

Substantial Victory for Indigenous Villages Opposing 2nd Airport on Jeju Island, South Korea

Their struggle is perhaps far from over, but the five villages of Seongsan-eup, Jeju Island–South Korea, who have actively opposed a controversial 2nd airport/ airport city/ aerotropolis project,  have come to an initial agreement with Jeju Island’s provincial government. The two parties agreed to reevaluate the original  feasibility studies done on the proposed area.

South Korea: Second Jeju airport resistance intensifies – protest camp and hunger strike

The Hyderabad Bastee People's Federation birth

MSI formed the Hyderabad Bastee People's Federation at a Meeting of the leaders of slum communities at the MSI Auditorium on 12th August 2017. The five fold Goals of the Federation are: Uniting people of the 1486 Bastees of Hyderabad, Protection of rights, Zero Evictions, Right to City, and Formation of National and International Alliances. A 15 member Central Committee was formed to take the Goals forward.The Federation elected Mr. Md. Ashfaq as the president.

Philippines, Call for Support re San Roque Fire

On August 7 2017 one of KADAMAY’s main areas for organizing, Sitio San Roque faced a fire that destroyed more than a hundred homes. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, also a possible malicious motive is being investigated. San Roque has faced almost 10 fires in the past few years. Residents say it is one of the tactics of the those who would like to see the community demolished for more commercial purposes.
