Who are we?
The Popular Committee for Our Territories - Against Habitat III.
Why?
We want to propose a parallel space to the official Habitat III conference where all of civil society can share their experiences, reflections and desires for the new urban agenda…because another kind of city is possible.
How?
Organize the Social Form Resistance Habitat III from October 17-20 in Quito.
For who?
For all social organizations, local governments, and citizens world-wide who want to participate or support this important event.
Details about the project
Between October 17-20, Quito, Ecuador will host the United Nation’s International conference on Habitat and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III). This event holds an indispensible role in our lives because of its importance and impact at an international level. In a world where more than half of the population lives in cities, in October, HABITAT III will define our present and future urban challenges over the next 20 years!
Yet, there is also a serious problem with this event. The outcomes from Habitat III will be the result of an agreement between representatives of nation-states, multilaterals, and private lobbying groups. Local governments, social movements, and all of civil society will be spectators. Neither citizens’ claims nor the demands from popular society will be recognized. As a result, our cities are each time understood more as a commodity, as opposed to a product driven by citizens world-wide.
Thus, the Social Forum Resistance Habitat III will be a space for social organizations, civil society and communities who look for a different hope for our cities. Parallel to the event organized by the UN, the Social Forum will unite delegations from all around the world in Quito to develop a citizens’ proposal that will question: What kinds of cities do we want? After four days of mobilization, reflection, and multiple cultural events, our objective is to construct an alternative declaration to the United Nation’s proposed urban agenda.
17 de October : Evictions/Reconstruction
18 de October : Urban-Rural Connections
19 de October : Neighborhoods/Right to Housing
20 de October : Cultural Interventions/Mobilizations
This forum is a call to all social organizations around the world that want to participate in this event. We need your help to make this important event a reality; to continue thinking that “Another city is possible”.
Why and what is this Collection?
The Social Forum Resistance Habitat III is a self-managed event. This means that in October that all organizations that wish to participate and support this initiative will have to cover all of their own costs while in Quito.
